Improving the Environment

Next >

The surrounds of Dandenong Creek were once infested with weeds, blackberries and a wide variety of introduced plants. And much of the native flora and fauna had disappeared. Through the work of a dedicated group of volunteers, the area has gradually been transformed into a place where people like to come to walk, ride bikes or simply relax.

Today, the Club participated in World Environment Day, by assisting in planting 3000 trees and plants along Dandenong Creek at Wantirna. A sizeable crew from the Rotary Club of Boronia, First Friends of Dandenong Creek, and the local Buddhist Community were also involved. Bayswater CFA also assisted by watering the plants to ensure they are not affected by the very dry conditions.

All the plants being grown are native to the area.

The preparation of the site was carried out by a crew from Knox Council and the trees grown by Operation Regeneration, a local business specialising in producing native plants.

The Club has been involved in this event for a number of years, and is proud to see the improvement made in the surrounds of Dandenong Creek over the years it's been involved. In addition to trees, shrubs and grasses native to Dandenong Creek, many native animals - sugar gliders, platypuses, etc - are beginning to return to the area.
